Step By Step

“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
- Mahatma Gandh

If you have ever tried to climb a ladder, you know that it is easier to climb it one rung at a time.

When we are in a hurry, we may forget this simple bit of wisdom and try to scamper up a couple of rungs at once. This is usually a big mistake and sometimes even results in our falling off (An even bigger mistake is climbing the wrong ladder! Make sure the ladder ends someplace where you want to be!).

Incremental, steady, and consistent progress is what builds our confidence. Whether we are referring to investing our money, our attainment of knowledge, or our development of technical skills, we try to build upon past success.

Investors have their own terminology to describe this phenomenon: The last rung climbed is “support” and the rung above is called “resistance.” In the workplace, many refer to resistance as a “glass ceiling.” Whatever you call it, progress is only made by continually assaulting the resistance until it is overcome.

When you want to climb to new heights, remember to keep looking at where you want to go rather than focusing on where you have been. Taken step by step, you can accomplish anything if you persevere.
