Dance.

‘Til death do us part.

————

In a recent post, I mentioned we are approaching a season of darkness.

The daylight hours are woefully short, and by 4:30, it is time to light the fireplace instead of heading to the pool.

What a difference a little time makes.

I stand up for Aunt Gisela; we lost her to Ovarian cancer a few weeks ago. This hit fast and hard, but at least spared her years of pain and suffering. Uncle Art remained devotedly by her side, stoically accepting of her fate, but privately mourning the loss of his dear spouse.

She was an amazing woman of culture who still played the cello with passion in the local symphony while well into her eighties. She was loving and caring and expressive; and always with a twinkle in her eye.

Art, you are a wealthy man for the love and  the friendship that you both shared.

We will miss her.

I stand up for Aunt Mimi.  A week ago she lost her year-long battle to brain cancer. She was also an artist. She painted, not with precision mind you, but with enthusiasm. Mimi loved reading, and scorned television. With no children of her own, she used her maternal instincts with my wife and her siblings, sharing her love for culture with them. When our girls were young, they would stay for a week vacationing. Trips for a dip in Puffer’s Pond and to the local ice cream parlor were enjoyed, and  quickly replaced the influence of TV, if only for a week.

She was also an avid traveler. She bicycled through Alaska on several occasions, and did the same in Germany, Iceland, and Ireland.

In addition to biking, she loved to ski, snow-shoe, hike, and do white water canoeing. Yes, while in her seventy’s and eighties. I’m tired just thinking about it.

At eighty she went hang gliding.

Mimi, I salute your courage, your values, your special smile. Your spirit will indeed remain an inspiration.

Her husband “was told by his friends to get on with his life” and largely ignored Mimi in the last 4 or 5 months while he went biking and hiking.

After 30 + years of marriage, he will undoubtedly perish a lonely man.

This is not a judgment of his values, but rather a contrast of decisions.

We all need to make our own choices as we dance our way through life.

I’d like to think it’s more fun with a partner, ’til death do us part.

On a brighter note, the circle of life continues.

Our youngest daughter Ali had a little girl “Nina” a few weeks ago. Our oldest, Jennifer, is expecting twins within a month.

Four year old George can’t wait for Chicken and Moe.

How he came up with those names I can’t fathom.

Sure wish I still had that child-like wonder.
